Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Cupping Therapy

By Ryde Natural Health Clinic’s TCM/Acupuncturist – Anthony Keating

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Cupping Therapy relives pain and relaxes tension in the body by increasing blood flow to the tendons and muscles around the cupped area.

In my experience, I have seen good responses to cupping from patients with the following lifestyles or symptoms:

-Tension from stress and anxiety

-Sitting too long

-Over Training

-Old injuries

-Frozen shoulder

-Office worker syndrome

-Neck, back, and joint tightness

How Does it work?

Massage uses a positive pressure based techniques and Chinese Cupping Therapy uses suction to get the opposite, negative pressure. After cupping is done, the tissues beneath the cupped site will often feel much more like liquid then hard cement. Muscle relaxing and pain relieving substances are sent to the tissues through the blood when the suction is engaged. These substances stay within the suction area of the cup and they are held there for 5-10 minutes. Once the pressure is released from the cup all these substances flow into the tissues below. This induces an intense relaxation effect in the muscles and other convective tissues. The relief felt by the patient after the cups are released is often described as light and fluid.
